She served as the first Director of the Davidson County Art Gallery and was one of the founders of the North Carolina Watercolor Society. Her artwork is owned by many corporations and private collectors. She exhibited her work in galleries throughout the state and won numerous awards at juried shows. On the occasion of the 100 th anniversary of the church’s founding in 2001, Katherine published a comprehensive history of First Reformed Church.Ī well-known and respected artist, Katherine was an integral part of the arts community in Lexington and Davidson County for many years. Katherine was a long-time member of the First Reformed United Church of Christ in Lexington where she served as a teacher and Deacon, and established the church’s History Room. She had an active social life and enjoyed spending time with her friends at Piedmont, where she lived independently until suffering her stroke. After Darrell’s death, Katherine designed and built a new house in Lexington where she lived until 2014, when she moved into the Piedmont Crossing continuing care community in Thomasville, NC. After 52 years of marriage, Darrell died in 2000. On July 14, 1948, she married Darrell Skipper of Lexington. She graduated from Central High School in Charlotte in 1947 and took art courses at Queens College (now Queens University) in Charlotte. Katherine was born on Apin Charlotte to John Thomas and Katherine Burton Flake. ![]() ![]() Katherine Flake Skipper, 92, died peacefully on June 16, 2021, ten days after suffering a stroke.
